Any professional skip hire company must hold a waste carrier licence and provide you with a waste transfer note, which is your proof that the waste was handled by a licensed operator. This protects you legally; without it, you could face enforcement action from the local authority.

Certain items trigger specific regulations. Fridges and air-conditioning units contain F-gas (fluorinated gases), which must be safely recovered before disposal—a skip operator cannot simply crush them. Sofas, mattresses, and upholstered furniture often contain foam or flame-retardant chemicals; regulations require them to be recorded and handled via specialist recycling routes. Electricals—televisions, microwave ovens, computers—fall under WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) rules and must be segregated for recovery of copper, gold, and rare metals.
